How far Huacachina is from Lima

Huacachina sits just outside Ica, a city of the southern coast about 275 km southeast of Lima in the valley of the Ica River.1 By road the distance is longer: Cruz del Sur gives its Lima to Ica bus route as about 303 km.4 From Ica, the lagoon is 5 km to the west.5

Travel times depend on whom you ask and on the traffic leaving Lima. PromPeru gives about four hours for the road trip from Lima to Ica in one guide and about 5 hours overland in another, and adds 10 to 15 minutes from Ica to Huacachina.36 Cruz del Sur lists its own buses at between 3 h 40 min and 6 h 5 min for the same leg.2

Plan for most of a day if you go one way and stay, and for a very long day if you go and come back. The road follows the Pan-American Highway south along the coast, past Pisco and the turn-off for Paracas, through farmland and open desert. The map on this page shows the whole line from Lima down to Nasca.

The Lima to Huacachina bus, via Ica

There is no long-distance bus that stops at the lagoon itself. The Lima to Huacachina bus is really a bus to Ica, followed by a short taxi or tuk tuk ride out to the oasis, both of which PromPeru names as the usual ways in.7 Coach companies run from Lima to Ica, and Cruz del Sur publishes its route details in plain figures.

Cruz del Sur runs about 58 departures a day from Lima to Ica, from 02:00 to 23:30, with journey times between 3 h 40 min and 6 h 5 min.2 Buses leave from its Javier Prado terminal in La Victoria, which is open 24 hours.8 The return runs about 44 departures a day from 00:30 to 21:00, taking between 3 h 55 min and 5 h 20 min.910

Luggage rules are generous: 20 kg in the hold at no cost and 6 kg of hand luggage, and the company asks you to be at the terminal 30 minutes before departure.11 Book a seat on the upper deck if you want the view of the coast, and keep a jacket in your hand luggage for the air conditioning.

From the bus terminal in Ica to the lagoon

Once you step off the bus in Ica, the oasis is close. PromPeru puts the drive at about 10 to 15 minutes, and taxis, tuk tuks and organized tours from the city center all make the trip.37 Agree the fare before you get in, and have the name of your hotel or hostel ready.

Many sunset outings save you the transfer. The sandboard and sandski evening this site recommends includes pickup from your hotel in Huacachina or Ica, and the most reviewed buggy tour lists drop-off points that include Ica and the Cruz del Sur terminal. If you arrive in the afternoon, you can go straight from the bus to the dunes.

Staying in Ica rather than at the lagoon is a reasonable choice. The city has a regional museum with textiles and pottery of the Nazca culture, and a long history of growing cotton and grapes.1415 Huacachina is livelier at night, with lights and bars around the water, while Ica is quieter and closer to the bus terminals.16

Lima to Huacachina in a single day

If you have only one day, a guided trip from Lima is the efficient answer. The Viator tour this page links to runs 18 hours, rated 4.91 from 6,795 reviews and starting from $49. It combines the Ballestas Islands, a pisco vineyard and Huacachina, with a guide in English and Spanish.

The day starts early: its meeting point is opposite the JW Marriott in Miraflores by 5:30 am, or there is hotel pickup in central Lima. The boat tour of the Ballestas Islands runs from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the vineyard visit with time for lunch takes 180 minutes, and there are 120 minutes of free time at the oasis.

The buggy and sandboarding with the sunset take 60 minutes and are included with the Premium option; on the basic options you can add them with your guide on the bus. The coach leaves Huacachina around 7:00 pm and is back in Lima around 11:30 to 11:45 pm. It is a long day, but it covers the coast in a way no bus timetable can.

Day trip or a night at the oasis

A day trip gives you a taste of the dunes. One of the Lima tours lists 1 hour of sandboarding and sunset plus 1 hour of free time at Huacachina, another 2 hours at the oasis. That is enough for a buggy ride, a slide down a slope on a board and photos from the crest.

It is not enough for a real board or ski session. Our pick, with snow gear and an instructor, runs 4 hours, with 3.5 hours guided on the dunes. If learning to ride standing up is why you are going, take the bus, spend at least one night and book the evening on the sand.

A night at the lagoon also gives you the quiet hours. Walking the dunes at sunrise shows the colors of the landscape at their softest, and the lagoon is calm in the early morning before the buggies start.29 You can also carry on south afterwards to Nasca, about 2 hours from Ica by road, rather than going back to Lima.22

Driving yourself from Lima

Driving is possible, and the route is simple: south from Lima on the Pan-American Highway, past the turn-off for Pisco and Paracas, then inland to Ica. The Paracas National Reserve lies about 261 km south of Lima and 42 km from Ica city, which makes Paracas a natural stop to break the drive.12

Leaving Lima is the slow part, and the traffic in the southern suburbs can add hours on a bad day. Start early, fill the tank before the long desert stretches and keep water in the car. The desert sun is fierce in the middle of the day; keep sunglasses within reach of the driver.

You will not need the car for the dunes: the sunset outings collect you from your hotel in Huacachina or Ica. If you rent a car for a coast loop, Huacachina makes a good base for Paracas to the north and Nasca to the south, both covered on their own pages here.

Which way suits you

If you are heading on to Nasca, Arequipa or Cusco, take the bus to Ica and treat Huacachina as a stop on the way south. If you are flying home from Lima soon, a day trip saves a night and a transfer. If you want the full sunset session on board or skis, give the oasis at least one night.

Premium day trips change the start of the day. One of them collects you from your accommodation, reaches Paracas around 9:30 am and drops you back in Lima around 11:30 pm. Check whether your ticket includes the Huacachina activities or only the stop.

Whatever you choose, keep the cancellation terms in mind. The day trips compared here let you cancel free of charge until 24 hours ahead, which matters on a coast where strikes and weather can change plans. One Lima tour warns in its own notes that it may change without notice because of weather, strikes or demonstrations.
