About Huacachina Sandboarding

A guide for the dunes above the lagoon

Huacachina Sandboarding is an independent guide for everyone who wants to ride the dunes at Huacachina, the desert oasis beside Ica in southern Peru. Here you will find how the sunset sandboarding outings compare, what a dune buggy ride involves and what Peru's tourism board says about it, whether a board or skis suit you better, how to get from Lima by bus or on a day trip, how Paracas and the Ballestas Islands fit into the same day, what else there is to do around the lagoon, how hot it gets month by month, and how to add a flight over the Nazca Lines.

The site is available in English and five additional languages. It is written first in English.

How we research

Every number on our pages comes from a source that we link to at the bottom of the page: mostly PromPeru, Peru's official tourism board, the tourism inventory of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), the protected-area service SERNANP, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the bus line Cruz del Sur for its own routes. The month-by-month climate figures are the 1991 to 2020 normals of the San Camilo station of SENAMHI, Peru's national weather service, in the Ica valley about 6 km from the lagoon, as filed with the World Meteorological Organization; the day length is our own calculation. Information on tours, that is duration, stops, languages, inclusions and starting prices, is taken from the offers on GetYourGuide and Viator. If a source does not provide something, we do not write it.

Listings differ in what they include, from the board or skis you ride to the buggy, the drinks and the pickup, and the desert can change a plan on the day. That is why we tell you plainly what a listing states and what it leaves open.

How we make money

Huacachina Sandboarding is funded through the GetYourGuide and Viator affiliate programs. When you book through one of our links, we receive a commission; your price remains the same. There are no advertising banners here, and we do not sell your data.
