In between · the evening
The evening starts with a pickup from your hotel in Huacachina or Ica and a car ride of 20 minutes, then 3.5 hours guided on the dunes. The group meets 30 minutes early to try out the gear, and a 10-minute walk over the sand takes you to the buggy station.
From there the buggy carries the group into the dunes, and you choose a snowboard or skis for the runs. The listing includes a 3-hour dune buggy ride, a certified instructor who speaks Spanish and English, and a follow cam that films your runs.
The light changes as the evening goes on. The last runs come as the sun drops toward the crests, and the outing ends on top of a dune with a bonfire, snacks and cocktails while the sky turns orange. It is the hour the dunes are famous for.

In between · why huacachina
Huacachina is a lagoon in the middle of the desert of the Ica region, ringed by palms, eucalyptus and huarango trees, with rolling dunes on every side. It lies 5 km west of Ica city, at 406 m above sea level.
The Huacachina sand dunes are the attraction. PromPeru describes sandboarding here as riding down dunes up to 100 m high, and says the dunes are considered among the highest in the region. The lagoon and the desert around it form a Regional Conservation Area.
The name comes from the legends. In Quechua, Huacachina means weeping woman, and one story says the lagoon formed from the tears of a green-eyed woman mourning her beloved. In 2017 The Telegraph ranked the oasis among the world's 21 most stunning destinations.

Most of us had never skied or snowboarded and we were very nervous, but our guide was a kind, patient teacher, and we came away with amazing photos and videos.”

The buggy ride is wild, so be ready. We both tried sandboarding with no snowboard experience and picked it up fast. Huge fun, I only wish it had lasted longer.”

The best thing I did in Peru. Dunes of different sizes, instructors who match your level, videos that make you look like a pro, and a fire with pisco sours at sunset.”

Organized professionally from the start, with great equipment and English-speaking staff. We were split into skill groups, so nobody felt left behind.”
In between · what guests say
Across 507 reviews the average is 4.91. The recent reviews talk most about the instructors, named one by one: patient, encouraging, kind and good at teaching people who had never stood on a snowboard or skis before. Several guests write that they picked it up quickly on their first evening.
Guests also praise the videos and photos the guides take of every run, the panoramic views over the dunes, and the end of the tour: the fire, the pisco and cocktails, the snacks and the sunset. More than one compares the buggy ride to a roller coaster.
The honest notes are about the buggy and the group. One guest found the driver too fast over the dunes, and another wrote that the group was larger than the listing's limit, spread over several buggies. Read those alongside the rest; they are the exceptions in a long run of glowing reviews.

The weather station of Peru's national weather service SENAMHI at San Camilo, in the Ica valley near the lagoon, records mean daily highs from 25.2 °C in July to 33.4 °C in March. Nights fall from 18.7 °C in February to 10.3 °C in July.
Rain hardly exists here: the station records 10.6 mm of precipitation in a whole normal year. PromPeru names February and March as the best time to visit, when it is warmer, and calls the oasis a good destination all year.
For a sunset session, the season changes only what you wear. In the southern summer the evening on the dunes is warm; in the winter months, bring a fleece for the bonfire. The sand is rideable in every month of the year.

In between · the buggy question
Most board outings at Huacachina use a buggy to reach the slopes, and this one includes a 3-hour ride. The buggy is fast, steep and loud, and for many guests it is half the fun.
Peru's tourism board takes a clear line. PromPeru tells visitors to stay away from dune buggy services, because the activity is currently neither regulated nor officially supervised, and asks them to put their safety first. We repeat that advice here in full.
If you book, take it seriously. Wear the helmet and goggles in the kit, keep your arms inside, and say clearly if you want the driver to slow down. Our dune buggy guide sets out what the listings show about safety and what you can check yourself.
Your sunset
Pick a date, get collected in Huacachina or Ica, and cancel free up to 24 hours before.
In between · booking terms
Booking works on a reserve-now, pay-later basis, and cancelling at least 24 hours before the start gets you a full refund. You can lock in a date now and finish planning the coast later.
Two costs sit outside the price: accident insurance and the Huacachina conservation area tax. PromPeru lists the entrance rate for foreign visitors at PEN 8.10, so carry some soles in cash.
Pickup is included from your hotel in Huacachina or Ica, the 2 pickup options the listing names. If you arrive by bus in Ica the same afternoon, give yourself enough time to reach your hotel before pickup; the group meets 30 minutes before the start to fit the gear.

In between · photos and video
You do not need to ride with a camera. The listing includes photos and videos filmed with a follow cam, and guests mention that the guides film every run. Keep your phone zipped away on the slope; sand and a fall do not mix well with screens.
Save your own camera for the quiet moments. The sunset from the top of the dunes is one of the most photographed sights at Huacachina, and the light is soft and warm for the last hour. Shoot the bonfire against the evening sky, and the riders as silhouettes on the crest.
Wipe the lens often and never change a lens in the wind. A bandana over your mouth helps on the buggy, and the kit includes one along with goggles. After dark, look back down at the lights around the lagoon below.
A truly dry desert
Ica gets just 10.6 mm of precipitation in a normal year.
That is the 1991 to 2020 normal of SENAMHI's San Camilo station near the lagoon, with the wettest month, January, at 5.1 mm. The dunes are dry enough to ride in every month.
In between · what to bring
The gear is supplied: skis or a snowboard with boots, poles and bindings, plus a helmet, goggles and a bandana. What you bring is the rest, and the listing names it: comfortable shoes and clothes, sunglasses, drinks, sunscreen, water and a daypack.
Long trousers save your legs on a fall, and a light long-sleeved top protects you from the sun on the buggy. PromPeru's essentials for the area add warm-weather gear and a windbreaker jacket for the evening.
Leave valuables at the hotel. Sand gets into every open pocket, and a phone zipped into a pocket or a small bag is far safer than one in your hand. Bring a little cash for the entrance rate and a tip for an instructor who taught you to stand up.
The practical part
In between · board or skis
You pick board or skis: the listing names sandboard or sandski and supplies both kinds of equipment. If you ski on snow, take skis; if you snowboard, take the board. If you do neither, either works, and the instructor is there to help.
The instructor speaks Spanish and English, and the group is limited to 10 participants. Guests who had never skied or snowboarded write that they learned quickly, and several say the groups were split by skill level.
Start on a gentle slope and move up to the bigger faces as you gain confidence. Falls are soft on sand, but tiring: getting back up on a steep slope takes effort, and your legs will feel the evening the next day.
Gear, instructor, buggy, bonfire. Snow equipment, safety gear, a certified instructor, pickup, a 3-hour buggy ride, follow-cam videos, snacks and cocktails.
4 hours. A 20-minute car ride, then 3.5 hours guided at Huacachina.
Yes. The listing names sandboard or sandski and includes skis, boots, poles and bindings.
No. A certified instructor is included, and PromPeru notes that riders can go down sitting, lying or standing.
Up to 10 participants. The listing states a small group limited to 10, with an instructor in Spanish and English.
Insurance and the area tax. Accident insurance and the Huacachina conservation area tax are extra.
People with back problems, among others. Also not suitable for people over 70, babies under 1 year and people with epilepsy.
At your hotel in Huacachina or Ica. There are 2 pickup options, followed by a car ride of 20 minutes.
It advises against them. The activity is neither regulated nor officially supervised, says the tourism board.
Rain is rare; cancel free if plans change. The station near Ica records 10.6 mm a year, and the booking can be dropped for free as late as 24 hours ahead.
In between · without a tour
The lagoon has its own pleasures. Rowing and pedal boats go out on the water, and PromPeru's list for the area adds a pisco sour at the lakeside hotel. The black-crowned night heron has become much more common here in recent years.
For a free sunset, climb a dune on foot from the shore. Walking the dunes at sunrise or sunset shows the landscape at its best, and PromPeru suggests a picnic in the desert beside the oasis with your own basket. Sandboarding equipment is also for rent at the resort.
After dark the lights of the businesses around the lagoon come on and the mood turns festive. By day, Ica's wineries and the Paracas coast are within easy reach; our guides cover both.

In between · honest caveats
This outing suits travelers who want to try sandboarding in Peru properly, on real snow equipment with an instructor, and end the day with the classic sunset. Its record runs to 507 reviews at an average of 4.91.
Know the limits. By its own terms the outing is not for anyone with back trouble or limited mobility, for wheelchair users, for people with epilepsy or an existing medical condition, for babies under 1 year or for anyone over 70. And the buggy ride comes with PromPeru's advice against dune buggies.
If you only want a quick slide and the sunset, a shorter buggy tour with sledding costs less, starting from $23. If you want the boards to be the point of the evening, this is the version built for it.
